Topic: Adolescence is a period of changes and challenges
B Ed 4th semester practical work
INTRODUCTION
Conscientization is a popular education and social concept developed by Brazilian pedagogue and educational theorist Paulo Freiri. It is a ‘critical consciousness’ awareness we arranged a Conscientization programme during the so days teaching practice. We selected the topic ‘Adolescence a period of changes and challenges/stress’. Adolescence is a period of biological significance. This is period of rapid changes from childhood to adulthood. According to the statistic of the World Health Organization (WHO) the adolescence period is from 11 to 19 years. So we have selected 8th standard students for the conscientization programme.
It is a spring period where we could see how the nature and god decorates girls and boys in the age of 11 to 19 years. It is a period of possibilities. It encourages and support self-esteem, idealism, decision making, friendship and hopes. So need more direction to choose right path. So we tried to lead them through this class
NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE
The conscientization is an awareness programme and was conducted for the 8A students of the St. Gorettis HSS Nalanchira. Because of the school was girls only in high school section, we could only have girls for the class. We took an adolescence based topic for making an awareness among them. Adolescence period is a time of change and stress. It is a period where they have to get good direction and support. Now a day, children have no sufficient awareness about their life and they have a pre-mature nature. So they wanted to be conscious about hygiene especially during the beginning of adolescence period. If it is not so they will be facing many problems in future related to physical, mental and social. The main aim of providing this awareness was to give a critical consciousness to the future citizens about the changes and challenges which have to accept with healthy mind and to teach how to be happy and energetic in adolescent period so that they could bloom and fly in different colours.
OBJECTIVES
To develop critical consciousness about the adolescent period
To make the children aware of the problems which may have to face by the lack of awareness during selecting friends, in physical changes, addictions, etc.
SAMPLE
We have selected 8 A students for the program. All forty of them were girls.
SRATEGY ADOPTED
ICT integrated, student oriented, discussion method, the help of teaching aids, videos, and PPT.
THEME OF THE PROGRAM
‘Adolescence period changes and challenges/stress’
NOTICE
ORGANIZATION OF ACTIVITIES
As a part of Bed curriculum and practice I and six trainees conducted a conscientization programme during our training session at St. Gorettis HSS, Nalanchira on ‘Adolescence period changes and challenges’, on 21st January. We invited him and my mentor for the programme. The programme began with prayer song, followed by that Arya Dhanan M A welcomed everyone to the programme and gave a powerful foundation for the programme through her introduction followed by that Athira conduct a discussion among students about the physical changes during adolescence in girls. Along with that topic Elizabeth Mathew explained the physical changes in boys during adolescence. Followed by that Shini Alex asked about the food style of students and she explained about the need and importance of food and certain tips to follow for good health along with that Sini. S. S talked about adolescence- concept of beauty and persecuted a PPT related to that.
The next phase is challenges and stress and addictive habits in adolescence period was taken by me. I could generate awareness before the students about the topic with a great demonstration Priyanka helped me to show videos related to challenged of adolescence on Yavatha. Then a question section was also conducted repeated to the topic by Priyanka. She cleaned all the doubts related to the topic the questions asked by the students are as follows.
How can we understand the changes of mind?
How many hours does we use a pad?
To whom we can share our problems?
Is it safe to have boyfriends?
Why we can’t use phone or social media? Etc
After discussion Priyanka concluded the topic and I delivered vote of thanks, and the students said their feedback and vote of thanks.
FEEDBACK
The students actively co-operated to conduct the programme. The HM and my mentor also supported me. Sometimes students were not frank because of shyness to talk about their changes later on they got awareness and courage enough to express their feelings to us. They too have given good feedback about the programme.
FINDINGS AND SUGGESTIONS
Students just had small knowledge on their physical, mental changes during adolescence. But after the programme, they realized that it is not a disorder it’s a gift from nature. Challenges can overcome through love, care, kindness, good friends, knowledge and awareness. The school should:
Provide awareness
Promote the working of counselling cell
Provide good books
Create a club to help the students
CONCLUSION
It is pleasant to get a chance to conduct a socially relevant programme like this. I hope all the activities of the programme will help my students in future. Thanks to HM of St. Gorettis HSS, my mentor, my friends and my dear students of 8th standard for making this programme a successful one.
The adolescent is no longer a child, but they haven’t yet reached adulthood. Puberty is the physical maturing that makes an individual capable of sexual reproduction. As a period of inevitable turmoil that takes place during the transition from childhood to adulthood, storm and stress are part of it. But it is the best stage in life. Through this conscientization programme, we could give good awareness about this period and clear their doubt and calm down their tensions and stress. It was a great opportunity for me to plant good values in their growing mind to bloom as good citizens and future adults.
